*Christchurch Earthquake*

The Lyttelton Harbour Basin Youth Centre in partnership with Lyttelton Community House are currently supporting the meals to the elderly initiative (Lyttelton Community Meals)

This service has evolved from the February 22nd earthquake, when Lyttelton was cut off from Christchurch.

Meals were being cooked from the Lyttelton Recreation Centre, which was the Civil Defence Centre during this time and people from the community could go to the centre and enjoy a hot meal.

Some of the older folk in the community were not in a position to go along, so the meals were delivered to them.

The Recreation Centre has been operating as a Recovery Centre over the past three weeks and the meals have been cooked at the Youth Centre/Community House.

This service is dependant on donations and volunteer help.

We have received generous donations of food and funds from several organisations ad families in the community.

There are 32 meals being provided, six nights per week and we anticipate that this number will grow, as people are being placed back in their homes.

We see this as an important service and also a means for our elders to have regular contact.

The earthquakes have left them living in damaged homes leaving them feeling helpless and vulnerable.

As winter approaches we see these meals and regular contact as being key in helping our elder community to stay safe and well.

If you would like to contribute to the Lyttelton Community Meals, you may do so by making donations to:
